Artist’s Statement by Inna Ray

I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley as its orange groves were being bulldozed to clear land for housing tracts. My family appreciated the natural landscape of Southern California, and on weekends we hiked in the foothills and mountains of the Angeles Forest and for vacations often camped in Joshua Tree and Owens Valley; early experiences that strongly influence my choice of subject matter today. My aptitude for art was recognized by my teachers in primary school and they got me into various weekend workshops provided for kids by artists in the Claremont area. In my twenties I attended Immaculate Heart College in Hollywood, studying painting and photography, and graduated with a BA in Art.

After many years living in the San Francisco Bay Area and painting with a focus on the figure, I relocated to the Eastern Sierra in 2010. Now I wander around in Owens Valley alluvial watershed and adjacent high desert lands, camera in hand, capturing images to use as sources for compositions in my travel-trailer studio.
